WHAT IS A STORM DRAIN?
Storm drains are rectangular grates with slats and are normally near the edge of the street. These grates collect water which then flows to the nearest stream or creek.
WHY SHOULD I CLEAN STORM DRAINS?
Clean storm drains or catch basins help prevent localized flooding. City crews work hard to keep storm drains clear, but we could use your help! With your assistance, we can keep streets safe and clear and can reduce property damage caused by flooding.
WHAT SHOULD I DO?
The following are simple steps everyone can take to ensure that our storm drains, as well as our creeks, streams, lakes and rivers remain clear:
- Check storm drain grates frequently to make sure they are free of leaves and debris.
- Do not remove the grate from the storm drain opening, this does not unclog the system and creates a hazard from everyone.
- Rake leaves away from storm drains near your home or business.
- Do not rake or blow leaves from your property into the street.
- Do not dump anything down storm drains.
- Use pesticides and fertilizers sparingly.
- Put litter in its place.
- Pick up after your pet.
- Sweep driveways, instead of spray washing.
- Collect yard waste & keep it out of storm drains.
- Use a car wash.
- Recycle used motor oil.
- Check your car for leaks.
- Have your septic tank inspected every 3-5 years.
REMEMBER: Only rain should go down the drain!
Clogged storm drains can lead to flooding of streets and homes.
